"Civil society must work hand in hand with local government"
CEMR secretary general, Frédéric Vallier, addressed participants of the AGE Platform Europe annual conference, on 4 December 2014. In his speech, he underlined the role of local and regional actors in meeting Europe’s demographic challenge. He also invited representatives from the civil society to work hand in hand with their local and regional governments towards equality across all ages.

Congratulations to our Secretary General for his election as Vice President of the European Movement International
With a majority of votes, Frédéric Vallier became one of the three vice presidents of the European Movement International (EMI)*. For the next trois years, he will share this position with a representative of the Union of European Federalists, Ugo Ferruta and Eva Paunova, member of the European Parliament. His election took place during EMI’s Federal Assembly on 28 and 29 November in Rome.
*CEMR is a member of the European Movement International, a nonpartisan organisation promoting European integration. -
Urban innovation - 29.10.2014
Four European cities shortlisted for the Guangzhou International Award
The Guangzhou International Award for Urban Innovation aims to motivate cities and local authorities to further promote innovation and to improve city governance. The list of European cities shortlisted includes Bristol (United Kingdom), Hamburg (Germany), Linköping (Sweden) and Eskisehir (Turkey).
The awards ceremony will take place on 28 November in Guangzhou (China). -

How to get funds to implement active ageing initiatives? Find our more during the next webinar on age-friendly environments
The thematic network for age-friendly environments (AFE-INNOVNET) is organising a webinar entitled “EU Funds for Age-friendly Initiatives”. The event will be the chance to address several crucial themes for local and regional authorities and their partners, like the funding opportunities offered by the European Social Fund and Horizon 2020. Future calls for participation will be as well on the agenda.

DG energy explains you how energy efficiency will help in the fight against climate change
Head of Energy Efficiency Unit (DG Energy) at the European Commission, Paul Hodson, has written an article (available in French) supporting the implementation of sustainable energy projects in the fight against climate change. Mr Hodson also explains the different EU funds available for local government to accelerate Europe’s transition to a low carbon society. -

Our partners from the thematic network for age-friendly environments (AFE-INNOVNET) have created an online repertoire that gathers practices promoting good quality of life for elderly people. You can from now on get inspired from other stakeholders (universities, industries, etc.) and share your achievements.

Council of Europe Congress elects new leadership
The Congress has a renewed leadership voted in at its 27th session, on 15 October. Congress members elected Jean-Claude Frécon as President of the Congress. For its part, CEMR executive president, Anders Knape, was appointed President of the Chamber of Local Authorities. The term of office for leadership positions is 2 years.

Hungarian municipal elections - 13.10.2014
Prime Minister‘s party won the mayor‘s post of Hungary‘s largest cities
Prime Minister Viktor Orban‘s Fidesz party was the main winner in Sunday‘s nationwide municipal elections. The Fidesz–Hungarian Civic Alliance party won the mayor‘s post in Budapest and in 20 of Hungary‘s 23 largest cities. -

9th edition of the distinction "Best Practice in Citizen Participation"
The International Observatory on Participatory Democracy (IOPD) invites local government to participate to its 9th Distinction Distinction of “Best Practice in Citizen Participation”. With this distinction, the IOPD recognises projects aiming, for instance, leading to better results in the domain of gender equality or at promoting transparency in the decision-making process.
Candidates are free to apply until 29 November. The ceremony to deliver the distinction will take place in March 2015.
