Diversity and integration

The European Commission is organising a conference on regional policy responses to demographic challenges, in Brussels, on 25 and 26 January 2007.

 

The event will showcase examples of best practice in order to provide learning opportunities for regions all over Europe. The adaptation of labour markets, the cooperation between regions to seize new opportunities, the development of rural and urban strategies, and the potential of the new technologies to respond to demographic challenges, these are some of the topics that will be discussed during the conference.

 

More than 500 participants from all over Europe are expected to take part in the conference. Speakers will include Danuta Hübner, EU Commissioner for regional policy; Wolfgang Schuster, Mayor of the city of Stuttgart and CEMR Vice-president; Antonio Arrufat Gascón, Vice-president of the provincial government of Teruel, FEMP (Spanish Federation of. Municipalities & Provinces); as well as representatives from the EU Commission and experts on the issue of demographic changes.

 

The Council of European Municipalities and Regions (CEMR) has also published a publication on "The impact of demographic change on local and regional government". The publication examines the challenges facing municipalities and regions in four countries, namely the Czech Republic, Finland, Germany and Spain and the measures taking in response to demographic changes.
