CEMR seminar on the charter for equality of men and women (Limassol, 4/5 Nov. 2005)
The Council of European Municipalities and Regions (CEMR) will organise the second seminar of the European charter for men/women equality in Europe's towns and regions, in Limassol (Cyprus), on 4 and 5 November 2005.
The main aim of the seminar is to discuss the content of the future charter, due to be formally adopted at the project's final conference, in February 2006.
Speakers will include the president of the Union of Cyprus municipalities and mayor of Limassol Demetris Kontides; the Cypriot Minister of Justice of Public Order Doros Theodorou; the chair CEMR's committee of women elected representatives of local and regional authorities Vicenta Bosch Palanca; le représentant de la Commission européenne à Chypre, Themis Themistocleous; and CEMR secretary general Jeremy Smith.
Simultaneos workshops will be held to gather participants' views on the draft text fo the charter. There will also be a round-table on women's participation in politics in Mediterranean and Southern European countries.
The first seminar of the project was held in Bilbao, on 10/11 June 2005. At that first meeting, participants discussed the structure and the content of the future charter. They agreed that the charter will list fundamental rights to achieve a genuine men/women equality.
