Back to more traditional gondolas in Venice
Venice's gondolas must return to a more traditional style. This is the new decision that could be voted by the city council in view to preserve the historical and iconographical characteristics of the famous vessels.

Gondolas in Venice are not what they used to be. Shining and eye-catching decorations, multi-colored cushions and seating: everything is being made to attract the tourists. Initiated by the city's gondoliers association, the new rule would impose a more traditional appearance: seat frames and cushions in plain leather, dark blue, black or purple interiors and exterior of the boat in black. Golden ornaments would also be banned and the number of statuettes reduced.

Clients often prefer a flamboyant craft, but the boat has a history and characteristics that must be upheld, said Roberto Puppi, the head of the association. We are in Venice, not in Las Vegas!

In line with the new rule, six-month courses will be given to apprentice boatsmen to perfect their general knowledge and to refresh their memory on gondola history.
