Meeting of the secretaries general and directors

Statutory Affairs - 26.03.2019

Wrap-up of the meeting of the secretaries general and directors
The secretaries general and directors of CEMR member associations met in Brussels on 25 and 26 March. One of the main highlights of the meeting was the debate on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and their implementation on the ground.

The meeting started with an exchange between the secretaries generals and Alice Siragusa, representing the European
Commission's internal scientific service, the Joint Research Center (JRC). The service has developed urban indicators that make it possible to map the implementation of the SDGs in Europe, to make predictions, and to compare the performance of territories.

Speaking on the subject, Alice Siragusa said: "Thanks to our tools, you can visualise local and regional trends all over Europe, and generate estimates that go until 2060! It is also possible to visualise the
rate of road accidents (SDG 3), the accessibility of green spaces in the city (SDG 11), or the risk of flooding (SDG 13)."

The set of tools is available on the JRC Urban Data Platform. That's not all: Ms Siragusa also announced plans to publish a handbook to help local governments develop their own SDG monitoring tools.

The meeting was also an opportunity to present the RFSC tool, an online toolbox for European local governments involved in, or willing to initiate, an integrated and sustainable urban development process.

On the same subject, CEMR Secretary General, Frédéric Vallier, has already invited local and regional elected representatives to attend the CEMR Congress in Innsbruck, which will take place from 6 to 8 May 2020, entitled "Local action. Global Shift. Living the Sustainable Development Goals".

The Secretaries General were also notified of the main conclusions of the evaluation work of CEMR activities around the projects. They also discussed CEMR's future knowledge strategy.

Other items on the agenda included CEMR's campaign for the EU elections, the renewal of CEMR's decision-making bodies and CEMR's next retreat on 5 and 7 November.
