Policy Committee - 13.12.2016
Towns and regions have to play a crucial role in the implementation of the global agendas, says UCLG President
In a video screened during the CEMR Policy Committee in Maastricht, the President of our global association (UCLG), Mpho Parks Tau, called on European local and regional elected representatives to contribute to the implementation of the global agendas: “It is important that we assume an active role as a pivotal player in the implementation of the global agendas epitomized through the sustainable development goals, the [Paris agreement on] climate change and the New Urban Agenda which was adopted in October.”
To this aim it is crucial that UCLG and its regional sections, including CEMR, join forces to make sure that the effective implementation of the global agendas takes into account “the differences in our regions and also the differences in the size, the dynamics on our respective territories.”
Furthermore, Parks Tau declared that in the coming weeks and months he will work with CEMR presidency on a roadmap to implement the “Bogotá Commitment and Action Agenda”. Adopted during UCLG world summit in Bogota in October, this political document presents a set of recommendations and actions to be taken in all spheres of governance to achieve the different global agendas (SDGs, the Paris Agreement, the Sendai Framework and the New Urban Agenda).
Parks Tau, who is also President of the South African Local Government Association (SALGA), also thanked CEMR delegates for supporting his leadership.
