European Green Capital - 22.10.2010

And the winners of the European Green Capital award are: Vitoria-Gasteiz and Nantes!
The cities of Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain, and Nantes, France, were respectively awarded the European Green Capital award for 2012 and 2013 by European Commissioner for Environment, Janez Potoènik,.at the awards ceremony held in Stockholm on 21 October 2010.

Vitoria-Gasteiz notably won for its 'Green Belt", a green area around the city centre ensuring that its entire population lives within 300 metres of an open green space. 'This Green capital award is the archetype of awards given in the sector of sustainable development," declared Patxi Lazcoz, Mayor of Vitoria Gasteiz. 'This is the city's reward for an impressive 30 year-long process."

The City of Nantes received the award for its integrated and sustainable transport policy which minimises car transport, provides pedestrians with optimal conditions and encourages cycling. Nantes was also the first French city to reintroduce electric trams. 'This recognition shows that the efforts made by Nantes in sustainable development have come to fruition. 2013 will thus be an opportunity to share and enrich this experience with all Europeans," stated Jean-Marc Ayrault, Mayor of Nantes, at the occasion of the award ceremony in Stockholm.

The European Green Capitals award was first launched in 2010 and serves as a celebration of cities tackling challenges such as urban spread, waste, air pollution, over-population, transport, stress on water supplies and energy supplies.
