French overseas departments reject increased autonomy
Two French overseas departments have rejected plans for increased autonomy. In a referendum held on 10 January, 70% in French Guyana voted against the proposal. In Martinique, 80% of the voters rejected the proposal.
Voters were asked whether they wanted local government to be given more powers, thus making the departments more like autonomous French territories, that have a different status.
The two territories are departments - giving them the same political status as mainland France, and receive considerable financial support from central government.
According to various sources, local leaders in boths departments had campaigned in favour of the proposal.
The turnout was relatively low with 48% voters going to the booths in French Guyana, and 55% in Martinique.
There are about 200,000 inhabitants in Guyana and some 400,000 in Martinique.
