Town twinning for peace and human rights": a commemoration ceremony in Auschwitz
The Italian section of CEMR (AICCRE) and the Association of Polish cities (ZMP) are organising a european conference on 'town twinning for peace and human rights", in Oswiecim (the Polish town where Auschwitz extermination camp was located), from 13 to 15 June 2009.

This event will focus on town twinning as a decisive way of creating ties and understanding between citizens in a united Europe - in economical but also political terms.

On Thursday, June 14, visitors will have the possibility to commemorate the 69th anniversary of the first deportation to Auschwitz. They will be able to bring a stone from their town, region or province, place it on the peak of the Mound of Remembrance and Reconciliation. It will be erected all around the extermination camp, as a permanent symbol of reconciliation and peace around the world. Participants will also be invited to make a financial contribution to support the ex-prisoners and the city of Oswiecim.

The Mayor of Oswiecim and chair of CEMR's working group on twinning, Janusz Marsalek, will host the event.

The programme and registration form (until 25 may) are available here (only in Italian). More information is available on AICCRE website (only in Italian). You may also contact Marijke Vanbiervliet or Luana Lupi.
