How can local and regional government implement the new European rules on organic waste? This will be one of the question addressed at the conference organised by the Association of Cities and.Regions for Recycling and sustainable Resource management (ACR+) and Bruxelles Environment, on 20 and 21 November 2008, in Brussels.

The European Parliament adopted on 17 July 2008 a resolution on the new directive on waste*. One of the main purpose of the directive is to encourage Member States to organise the separate collection of organic waste in order to compost it or digest it and to treat it in a way that fulfils a high level of environmental protection.

 

The conference "The organic waste management in urban environment - New European challenges" aims to promote information exchange about how to implement the new European rules and to foster the debate at European level, particularly about the appropriateness of concrete actions for waste prevention and recycling.

 

The conference will be organised around four topics:

The second session will be chaired by the expert on Environment from the Council of European Municipalities and Regions (CEMR), Marie Bullet.

 

* The new directive sets out a number of new rules for Member States, such as putting together binding national programmes on waste prevention as well as achieving reuse and recycling targets by 2020.
