The European Commission has launched a public consultation on a European approach on local governance and development cooperation (north-south).

According to the Commission, the consultation ('Towards. an EU approach to local democratic governance, decentralisation and territorial development') aims to.gather orientations and views from relevant stakeholders regarding future EC policy in the field of local governance in all its dimensions. A number of central issues are explored in this consultation: local democratic governance, decentralisation, territorial development and the role for local authorities.

Local authorities, non-state actors' organisations, institutions and networks interested or active on this debate, partner countries institutions, individual experts, donors and development partners' organisations are involved in this consultation.

The consultation is supported by the 'background information" document.

 

The public consultation will close on 16 June 2008. It should lead to a Commission's communication for july 2008.
