English and Welsh municipalities launch climate change campaign
The Local Government Association (LGA) representing England's and Wales' municipalities has launched a climate change campaign in the UK. According to LGA, climate change is the most important long-term priority for.local governments.
The 'Small change, big difference" campaign encourages councils to reduce carbon emissions and prepare for the consequences of more extreme weather in their areas, to seek greater power for councils and to influence public opinion and behaviour.
As part of the campaign, LGA has published a report looking at how to cut household's carbon emissions and energy bills. One of the report's proposals is that energy suppliers should contribute £500 million ( about 700 million euros) a year towards a national programme, which would save around 10million householders over £200 a year on their energy bills. This programme requires systematic and co-ordinated local action: local councils know the housing stock in their areas, and as a service provider, have strong connections with households.
