Social Democrats win polls in Berlin and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania
The Social Democrats (SPD) have won the regional elections in Berlin and in the Land of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

In the German capital, the SPD won 31% of the votes, slightly improving its score from the last election in 2001. The incumbent mayor, Klaus Wowereit, should keep his functions. The Christian-Democrats (CDU) are second with just over 21% of the votes.

In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the SPD wins the elections with 30% of the votes; the CDU is the second-biggest party (29%). In the last elections in the Land, SPD got 40% of the votes. The far-right party NPD scores 7%, and will therefore be represented in the regional parliament. Mecklemburg-West Pomerania, one of Germany's poorest Länder, becomes the third to have a far-right party in its parliament, after Saxony and Brandeburg.
