Skynurse : Training nursing staff via satellite
The Veneto region (Italy) has launched a pilot project : Skynurse aims to create a centre for distributing remote training courses for nursing staff from non EU countries.

The basic idea is fairly simple : The ageing of the EU population and the increasing demand for qualified nursing staff can't be met with the offer of suitably qualified local workforce. At the same time, many students in Eastern Europe require high standard education to gain access to the labour market.

The Veneto region, in partnership with Padova Ricerche, has thus launched Skynurse with a triple aim :
  • To provide EU hospitals with suitably trained nursing staff
  • To contribute to the social integration of Eastern European immigrants
  • To improve the educational standards of nursing staff in non EU member states.
The training is made of two stages : first, a three-month remote training delivered by satellite during which students can study in their country. Then an intensive three week residential course in Italy helping students prepare for the examinations.

The initial is to train 180 Romanian nurses, but the Veneto Region, along with the Puglia region, has recently widened the project to Bulgaria.

The budget of the project is euro 2 Million (co-financed by the European Space Agency).
