The first day of the conference (20 February) will consist of a general introduction of the content of the charter by CEMR secretary general, Jeremy Smith, and debates on equal opportunities at local level and on the role of women in the Lisbon strategy.

The second day (21 February) will focus on the commitments in the charter, its implementation and its future.

The charter is the follow-up to CEMR's previous project A European town for equality, which ended in February 2005. Since then, CEMR has been drafting the charter of gender equality with the help of its associations, local politicians and experts.
