World mayors commit themselves to Millennium Development Goals
Over 200 mayors from around the World have adopted a political declaration committing themselves to translate the United Nations' Millennium development goals into reality.
 
The mayors signed the declaration in Beijing, at the World Council of meeting of the world association of local government, United Cities and Local Government (UCLG). The World Council meeting took place between 8-10 June in presence of representatives from the United Nations and the World Bank. It was its first meeting since the founding congress of UCLG in May 2004.
 
The Beijing declaration will be given to the UN secretary general Kofi Annan, at an extarordinary meeting of the world's mayors at the UN headquarters on 10 September 2005.
 
The UN's Millennium development goals aim at improving the World's poorest population improve their standards of living by 2015. The development goals focus on criteria such as infant mortality, gender equality, AIDS, sustainable development...
