Forest fires: European municipalities set to join forces to help Greek counterparts
The Council of European Municipalities (CEMR) has invited Europe's local and regional government to help their Greek counterparts affected by the recent forest fires, via a letter to the national associations of local and regional government across Europe.
When the extent of the damage and destruction due to these fires became apparent, we asked our member in Greece, The Central Union of Municipalities and Communities (KEDKE) how Europe's towns and regions could best help, explains CEMR secretary general Jeremy Smith.
In a letter (see below), the president of KEDKE and mayor of Athens, Nikita Kaklamanis, thanked CEMR for its solidarity and informed it that a special bank account has been set up. Its aim is to help the municipalities most affected to buy equipment needed for fire-fighting, fire prevention and reconstruction, assisting them to be better prepared for future similar events.
The Greek association added that the transfers to and from the bank account will be monitored by a specific cross-political party committee, headed by the president of KEDKE.
CEMR has passed the information to its members, national associations of local and regional governments from 36 countries, suggesting that they invite their own members to consider making a donation.
Details of the bank account for contributions:
