CEMR study on women's participation in politics : still a long way from parity
The Council of European Municipalities and Regions (CEMR) has conducted a survey on women's participation in local and national politics.
The conclusions show that in all countries, there are fewer women than men in local assemblies.
Generally speaking, Nordic countries fare better with a higher percentage of women elected than Southern countries. The most 'equalitarian" countries are Sweden (41.6% of women sitting in local assemblies) and Latvia (41%), whereas Macedonia (8.5%) and Serbia-Montenegro (4% of elected women) are bottom of the table.
