Cohesion policy - 28.09.2017

Stand up for towns and regions’ future: join us on 11 October at #EURegionsWeek
Did you know that thanks to cohesion policy, an estimated 1 million new jobs were created in the EU between 2007 and 2014? Also, almost 33,500 km of roads were built or reconstructed in the EU’s towns and regions, as well as 5,100 km of railways; allowing Europeans to travel, go to work and visit their families.

And yet, due to increasing financial pressure, cohesion policy is in real danger of being weakened in the next EU budget in 2020. That’s why we, CEMR, with other local and regional government associations and the European Committee of the Regions, formed an alliance to defend it: the #CohesionAlliance.

Join us on 11 October (5 – 6:30 pm) to find solutions together on how to secure a strong and effective cohesion policy for all regions beyond 2020. Together with CEMR President Stefano Bonaccini* and the EU’s Director-General for Regional and Urban Policy, Marc Lemaître, we will discuss the next steps our alliance should take, and draw inspiration from different workshops of the European Week of Regions and Cities on the future of cohesion policy.

We firmly believe that cohesion policy is a pillar of the EU’s future. From towns and regions to SMEs, schools or NGOs: anyone who believes in EU cohesion policy is welcome to join the #CohesionAlliance.
