Defending local democracy in Ukraine: The Association of Ukrainian Cities turns 25
Shortly after the state of Ukraine achieved its independence, in 1992, the Association of Ukrainian Cities (AUC) was born. For CEMR, Ukrainian local and regional governments and their associations all belong to the European family, and as such, the AUC’s 25th anniversary is a family celebration.

The mayor of Kiev and Chairman of the AUC, Vitali Klitschko, invited CEMR secretary general Frédéric Vallier to celebrate this milestone for local democracy in Ukraine. On this occasion, Mr Vallier stated: “It is an honour for me to share with you this celebration of the 25th anniversary of AUC. This year, it is also 15 years since AUC is a member of CEMR. It is a good moment to recall the importance of the partnership between local governments all across Europe. For us, Ukrainian cities and their associations have their full place at the European table as part of the family.”

CEMR has been working closely with local and regional governments in Ukraine for over 15 years. In particular, during the Maidan movement in 2013, CEMR supported Ukrainian local democracy and closer cooperation with the European Union.

Today, through a strategic partnership with the European Commission, PLATFORMA and CEMR support Ukrainian local governments’ development, both on policy and capacity building, through a dedicated Eastern Neighbourhood program.

About AUC

The Association of Ukrainian Cities (AUC) was founded in 1992, at which time it consisted of 35 member municipalities. Today, it represents more than 95% of Ukraine’s urban population, and conducts advocacy, research, training, legal aid, exchange and twin city cooperation on a nationwide scale.
