CEMR in mourning - 09.11.2016

Former CEMR Vice-President, Dr Heinrich Hoffschulte, has passed away
The former CEMR Vice-President, president of the German section of CEMR (RGRE) and Chief Administrative Officer of the district of Steinfurt (Germany), Dr Heinrich Hoffschulte, has passed away at the age of 75.

Mr Hoffschulte was an important figure for CEMR and many will remember him and his work for the recognition of local government in Europe and in the world. We have lost someone who has shown tireless engagement and enthusiasm for local and European democracy throughout his life. We extend our deepest sympathies to his family and friends,” declared CEMR secretary general, Frédéric Vallier.

Heinrich Hoffschulte liked to say with a smile that he had been politically active for “45 years and three months altogether”. Throughout his long and diversified career in local and European politics – from local councillor in Werne (1970–1975) to CEMR Vice-President (1998–2004) – Mr Hoffschulte received several rewards for his work. Receiving the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1992, he went on to receive The Emperor Maximilian prize for local and regional politics in 2002, and the Golden medal of honour for 50-year membership in the EU in 2006.

He will be deeply missed.
