The final conference of CEMR's project A European town for equality will take place on 7/8 February 2005 in Brussels.

Amongst invited speakers are :
- Vicenta Bosch Palanca, Chair of CEMR Committee of women elected representatives of local and regional authorities.
- Edite Estrela, vice-President of the European parliament's Women's rights committee
- Beate Weber, Mayor of Heidelberg
- Paz Fernandez Felgueroso, Mayor of Gijón
- Catharina Tarras-Whalberg, Deputy Mayor of Stockholm

Representatives of the European Commission's DG environment and DG employment, social affairs and equal opportunities will be present at the conference. Representatives of the city of Venice, Frankfurt, Vienna, Rotterdam, Rennes and of United Cities and Local Governments will also attend.

At the occasion of the conference, CEMR will launch its "virtual town for equality" based on best practice already implemented in various European local collectivities. This "virtual town" takes into account women's specific needs in fields ranging from transport to urban planning and public services.

Various workshops and round-tables are on the agenda including :
- Participation of women in the decision making process : how to make women play a more important role in the decision making process at local level
- Equality in the city as an employer : debate and example of good practice in equal opportunities and equal rights in recruitment at local level
- Equality in public services
- A town better adapted to women's needs...
Several municipalities will show their achievements on these themes.

The project is made of 15 partners, municipalities and national associations of local and regional governments members of CEMR's. Its aim is to produce a methodology to create a town for equality. This virtual town will, in turn, help local governments find ways to achieve equal opportunities.

"A European town for Equality" was set up in the frame of the 5th action programme for women/men equality. It is a CEMR initiative funded by the European Commission.
