UCLG & Global Taskforce
Climate change, decentralisation, gender equality and sustainable development are all challenges that go beyond borders, bringing together local and regional governments to collaborate on an international scale.
As the European section of the global organisation United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG), CEMR demonstrates the impact of large, international debates on local and regional European governments, and seeks help them have a clear position by coordinating their messages and actions. The main goal is to maximise their resources, competences and capacities.
Headquartered in Barcelona, UCLG is present in 140 of the 193 Member States of the United Nations. Its members include cities and regions, as well as local and regional government associations.
UCLG Europe Coordination Platform
The aim of the platform is to coordinate the positions of European members of UCLG, both political and statutory, within the framework of UCLG’s activities. It meets prior to UCLG statutory meetings.
- To reinforce the participation of European UCLG members in activities and statutory meetings for the international organisation;
- To coordinate European members’ voices in large international debates (international climate negotiations, Habitat III)
The Global Taskforce of Local and Regional Governments is an umbrella network set up in 2013 at the initiative of former UCLG President and Mayor of Istanbul, Kadir Topbaş. It brings together the major international networks of local governments to undertake joint advocacy relating to international policy processes, particularly the climate change agenda, the Sustainable Development Goals and Habitat III.
